Medical Practice
In 1980, Professor Smolkin graduated from the Paediatric Faculty of the Azerbaijan State Medical Institute, Baku. He started his medical career as an organized children’s physician. Then, for 5 years he worked as a district paediatrician. From 1986 to 1988, he was trained in a medical residency in paediatric anesthesiology and resuscitation at the Research Institute of Paediatrics of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Moscow. After completing his residency, Professor Smolkin worked as an intensivist. From 1989 to 2003, he rose through the ranks from Junior to Leading Researcher of the Clinical and Diagnostic Department of the Moscow Research Institute of Paediatrics and Paediatric Surgery of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, having ultimately pursued a career of a paediatric allergist-immunologist and defended his Candidate and Doctoral Theses. From 2003 to 2004, he held the position of Deputy Director General for Medicine in Paediatrics at the Institute of Allergy and Clinical immunology, Moscow. Since 2006, he has been working as an allergist-immunologist, paediatrician and research supervisor at Scientific and Clinical Advisory Centre of Allergy and Immunology, LLC, Moscow. Since 2009, he has been a Professor of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology of the Academy of Postgraduate Education under FSBU FSCC of the Federal Medical Biological Agency, Moscow.
Scientific achievements
Establishing the role of the endogenous opioid system (neuropeptides) in specific immunotherapy, peculiarities of immunoglobulin receptors distribution on the surface of B-lymphocytes in atopic diseases in children.
Practical Implementation of Research Papers
He is the developer of numerous innovative proposals and 3 inventions, 2 of which are patented.
Publications
Author of 70 specialized scientific publications, including those in foreign periodicals, co-author of an international monograph on immunology, author of a large number of general-audience articles in printed mass media.
Organizational activity
Professor Smolkin is one of the main initiators and founders of the Association of Paediatric Allergists and Immunologists of Russia, All-Russian Public Organization, the founder and chief editor of the Allergology and Immunology in Paediatrics journal, has organized 16 congresses and conferences on allergy and immunology, including (together with the FSBU SSC of the Immunology Institute, FMBA of Russia) international ones (Immunity and Disease: from Theory to Therapy). In 2003, he organized a specialized paediatric medical centre on the basis of a private clinic under the Institute of Allergology and Clinical Immunology and managed it until 2006. In 2006, he established the Scientific and Clinical Advisory Centre for Allergy and Immunology, the first specialized scientific and clinical advisory private centre for allergy and immunology in Russia.
Teaching activity
Professor Smolkin teaches at the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology of the Academy of Postgraduate Education under FSBU FSCC of the Federal Medical Biological Agency of Russia, regularly gives lectures and speaks at conferences and congresses.
Educational activity
Professor Smolkin has over 50 appearances in the central press, on radio and television where he talked about topical issues of allergy and immunology. He is an organizer of conferences for parents of children with allergies.
